This August, Sandoway Discovery Center is proud to celebrate the magic of sea turtle nesting season with Turtley Awesome August—a month-long series of engaging, educational programs and community events dedicated to these extraordinary marine reptiles.
From pint-sized preschoolers to budding marine biologists, Sandoway's turtle-themed experiences are designed to inspire curiosity and deepen understanding of Florida’s native turtles during one of the most critical times in their life cycle.

Join us for a Turtley Awesome edition of the Discovery Series! Preschoolers will explore the world of sea turtles through storytelling, science, and creative play—including nest digs and habitat crafting. Select Saturdays in August—hands-on fun for little ocean lovers!
Tortoise Time! Meet our resident tortoises, Maggie and Gary! Discover the unique traits that distinguish tortoises from other turtles and learn about the crucial role gopher tortoises play in Florida's ecosystem. The session features a hands-on activity where kids will craft their own tortoises!
Participants will act as junior
scientists—excavating model nests, building habitat replicas, and learning about the ecological
importance of both sea and land turtles.
During the excavations, Sandoway
’s Director of Education will provide live interpretation on sea
turtle biology, threats facing marine turtles, and ongoing conservation efforts. It’s a rare
opportunity to witness science in action and learn how we all can protect these endangered
animals.
