The City of Delray Beach, the Delray Beach Historical Society and Spady Cultural Heritage Museum are Celebrating Delray’s Birthday!
October 11th, 2020 marks the 109th anniversary of Delray Beach’s incorporation. In honor of this important date, City groups are joining forces to celebrate Delray’s history and heritage with the “Longest, Linear, Outdoor History Exhibit in the World,” titled “Delray Memories.” It will feature images going back to the 1800’s to present date— all submitted by the community.
This unique outdoor exhibit launches October 23rd and will circle the one-acre campus located at 3 NE 1st Street in Delray Beach. It will be built by the Delray Beach Historical Society board members, staff and other volunteers and be displayed through mid December. The public is invited to send in their images digitally, or they can drop off photographs to the Delray Beach Historical Society or Spady Cultural Heritage Museum to be scanned for the project. Captions are required for all submitted images.
John Miller, president of the Delray Beach Historical Society says, “With our limited capacity to share Delray’s history indoors, we thought engaging the community to share their favorite Delray memories in honor of our town’s birthday would be a great way to bring people together in a fun, safe environment. We are hoping to exhibit at least 1,000 photos that will collectively represent Delray’s unique spirit and the stories of people’s lives in Delray Beach.”
Executive Director Winnie Edwards adds, “We’re most excited to get multiple generations involved. We’re blessed to not only be surrounded by our wise elders, many in their 90’s who were grew up here, but with younger families making Delray Beach their home. We’ll be able to see Delray memories through the ages. We’re hoping too that this exhibit will bring some levity and joy to the community during a very challenging time for so many.”
The City of Delray Beach will also be planning additional exciting ways for the community to wish Delray Beach a happy birthday including a call-in phone line.
